Starting at the end of the 19th century, many Americans viewed the emergence of large, industrial corporations as a threat to the republic, and these concerns were translated into the Sherman and Clayton antitrust acts. Today, a similar panic is in full force, this time led mainly by congressional Democrats, who have introduced sweeping legislation ostensibly targeting the 21st century corporate titans they and others derisively call “Big Tech.”
